Zoological Gardens

The zoological garden in Dehiwela is a beautiful landscape in which a rich collection of mammals, birds, reptiles and fishes from all over the world. The aquarium is the only one of its kind in Asia and displays over 500 varieties of aquatic life. The Zoological garden has a small, but picturesque butterfly garden which is decorated with small shrubs, trees, creepers and small streams. The butterfly garden exhibits 30 species of butterflies with their all stages of the life cycle for educational purposes. Also, you will see different species of animals brought from various countries of the world at the Dehiwala zoo, lions, tigers, leopards, hyenas, wolves, cheetahs, bears, rhinos etc. Even huge animals like elephants, giraffes are also kept in the Zoo. The zoo is open daily between 8.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Galle Face Green and Colombo City Sightseeing Tour

Galle faces green is a magnificent place to witness a marvellous sunset over Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka travels always enjoy and cherish an evening by the Galle Face Green. This is one of the most popular spots during sunset, hundreds of people come to fly kites, play cricket and to enjoy a nice walk along the green having ice cream. Galleface green is popular with travellers for hawker’s food stalls serving seafood dishes, BBQ meat and famous Srilankan Koththu Roti at very affordable prices.

National Museum of Colombo

One of the main attractions in Colombo is the National Museum of Colombo. The National Museum has situated in Colombo 7and it is a place you must visit as Sri Lanka inherits a great rich history over a period of 2500 years. The Museum holds three main sections for Natural Science, Cultural and library and nature section consists of four main subsections as Entomology, Zoology, Botany and Geology. For Entomology section there are over 95000 dry preserved insect specimens and over 5000 wet preserved insect specimens. Insects common around the world as well as insects which are only common in Sri Lanka are displayed.

ODEL Shopping Mall

In the middle of Colombo, there is a western style shopping mall called ODEL. You will find it at No. 5, Alexandra Place, Colombo 7. All the taxi and tuk-tuk drivers know where it is. ODEL is not a place to find very cheap bargains in Colombo, but the prices are good. It is an upmarket store that sells quality genuine designer labelled clothing. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and between 10 am to 6 pm on Sundays. There are a number of different food and drinking outlets. For children, there are toys and sweet shops. As well as fashionable clothes you can buy perfumes, cosmetics, sunglasses, plantation teas, shoes, sports equipment, stationery, bags, suitcases, home accessories, lights, music, books and interesting souvenirs. It is also one of the few places you can buy chocolates.

Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple

The Gangaramaya Buddhist temple is a beautiful and vibrant temple with a history that dates back over 2,000 years. This temple was said to have been built in the 19th century by a trader and ship owner named Don Bastion, who had played a leading role in reviving Buddhism.

Located beside a Holy Bo Tree on the waters of Beira Lake, the temple is only accessible by crossing a wooden bridge. According to historical records, the Lord Buddha is reputed to have preached under this Bo tree which is considered as a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi and is over 2500 years old.

Vesak Festival

The ritual, cultural and religious celebration, Wesak (or Vesak), commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death (or parinibbana) of the Buddha. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in May. Decorating the streets, homes and buildings with colourful lights, Lamps, lanterns and other decorations are very common during Vesak period. Several Vesak Zones are organised in Sri Lanka to decorate areas with colourful decorations and illuminations on the Vesak Fullmoon night.
